The ‘Other’ Sad Wives of AI

WIRED magazine recently published a feature story with the intriguing title “Meet the Sad Wives of AI.” There is no question that artificial intelligence has become something of an obsession for a lot of us, but this piece was squarely focused on Bay Area wives whose husbands are obsessed with building the next big thing.

The writer, Alessandra Ram, recounts an incident at home in Berkeley, California watching her 10-month-old daughter while chatting with her hubby via FaceTime, as he was working in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Though it was 2 am Eastern time, he excitedly zoomed into his laptop screen, shouting at his wife, “Just look at this! See?! Are you looking?” The author’s response:

I wasn’t. I was looking at our real baby. But that’s the thing. There are two babies in this household now: the small human one and the large language model. Both demand constant attention. Both keep us up at 2 am. Is this a Sophie’s choice kind of situation? Please. I’d kill the AI baby in an instant.

Sad, indeed. 

Occupation vs. Preoccupation

But this story really isn’t new. 

Silicon Valley startups and entrepreneurs chasing millions in venture capital —  forcing their families to survive on the dregs from a bitter potion of workaholism, greed and vanity — is a familiar tale.

While I sympathize with the writer and her cadre of neglected tech-bro spouses, there’s a much broader problem here.

It’s not AI as an occupation, but the preoccupation with AI that is the real story. 

Ram’s article hints at it when she quotes Bridget Balajadia, a therapist at Lupine Counseling in San Jose, who says some of her “sad wife” clients don’t even want to talk to her about their husbands. The reason? They think they’ve already fixed the relationship by using ChatGPT. 

The irony isn’t lost on Ram, who observes that AI is not only driving a wedge between couples: it’s also become a tool for attempting to salvage their marriage.

My take? The problem is not a spouse obsessed with building the thing, but one who’s found, in AI, what a human relationship is supposed to supply.

This is huge.

Think about it: millions of people’s growing obsession with AI is going to evolve into full-blown addiction, if it hasn’t already. 

And AI addiction is not going to be the same type of animal as screen addiction, social media addiction, or even video game addiction.

It’s Not a Window… It’s a Mirror

Why? Common technology addictions, whether they’re video streaming or news feeds, are a window to distraction. You want to escape life for a bit? Let’s watch somebody else’s life, let’s hear their stories, let’s laugh at them, or cry with them. Let’s forget about me and tune into them.

AI isn’t like that. It’s not a window you gaze through. AI is more like a mirror. It’s an entity that gazes back at you. It’s not a spouse who’s ignoring you. It’s a relationship (or what seems like one) that can provide what real human relationships should: warmth, empathy, validation. 

My fear is that, just like the adoption of the technology itself, the trendline of AI addiction is going to grow and scale faster than just about anything we’ve ever seen.

Am I going too far? I don’t think so. Clinical research is in its infancy, but let’s look at what social and behavioral scientists are uncovering.

Pioneering Investigators: MIT and Stanford

A prominent researcher tracking the emotional footprint of AI is Pat Pataranutaporn, a technologist at the MIT Media Lab’s Fluid Interfaces group. Working with teams from major AI labs like OpenAI, Pataranutaporn has pioneered studies into what is known as “affective use” — how humans use conversational AI, not just as utility tools (like searching for a recipe), but for emotional well-being, social support, and personal disclosure.

In their published frameworks, the MIT Media Lab has established some startling baselines. For example, a significant number of AI users report turning to AI to combat profound loneliness. May admit that they bypass traditional human resources entirely, using AI apps specifically to discuss personal mental health crises and emotional distress.

This work highlights a double-edged sword: in the immediate short term, a conversational AI can act as a psychological buffer, reducing acute feelings of loneliness. In the long term, heavy reliance correlates with a paradoxically steep drop in real-world social interactions and an escalation in chronic isolation.

At Stanford University, computer scientist Nick Haber is investigating how generative large language models (LLMs) interact with vulnerable minds. Haber’s research group recently put commercial models to the test by simulating therapeutic conversations — the exact kind of off-label “AI therapy” noted in the WIRED piece. The kind millions of young people are seeking.

Haber’s work revealed a critical vulnerability in how AI handles human emotional dependency. When users prompted models with expressions of severe distress or subtle cries for help, the models frequently suffered from “sycophancy” — a technical tendency to blindly agree with the user to keep the conversation going. Haber warned that rather than challenging a patient’s cognitive distortions (which a real therapist is trained to do), AI often validates or even amplifies a user’s harmful delusions, creating an incredibly toxic feedback loop for someone suffering from severe anxiety, depression, or psychosis. And the trouble is, it’s not just toxic: it’s addictive.

The Real Issue Isn’t Therapy, and it’s Not Willpower

It’s bad enough that the people most likely to seek AI therapy are among the least likely to benefit from it, or, heaven forbid, even reap real harm from their time with AI companions.

The real issue is addiction, or what some might call AI dependence. With any true addiction, willpower alone is not sufficient to stop the behavior. Left to its own devices, the addict’s brain is incapable of making a healthy choice. That’s why addicts call their condition a disease. And you can’t just will yourself out of a disease state, whether it’s alcoholism, workaholism, cancer or Parkinson’s.

The science of addiction is far from settled. The therapists bible, known as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) does not yet have a dedicated entry for “AI Use Disorder.” Perhaps stating the obvious, hyper-realistic LLMs and sophisticated AI companions only entered mainstream consciousness a few years ago. 

That’s why academic circles, neuroscientists, and frontline mental health practitioners are experiencing a sense of urgency about the phenomenon of AI addiction. To map this behavior, researchers recently developed the Generative AI Dependency Scale. The scale is a new theoretical and clinical framework, but the data is hardening, and the first formal psychological scales have been validated. 

The emerging consensus: AI addiction is not just another flavor of internet addiction. It possesses entirely new, deeply psychological dimensions that traditional technology never did. 

The Extra Layers of AI Addiction

With AI, we’re dealing with a completely different psychological beast, according to researchers. Traditional tech addiction relies on salience, mood modification, and tolerance. AI addiction includes those, but layers on three distinct, unprecedented dimensions:

1. The Illusion of Unconditional Warmth and Anthropomorphism

Human relationships are inherently full of friction, requiring compromise, vulnerability, and the risk of rejection. An AI companion, however, offers what psychologists call “unconditional positive regard.” 

    • The AI never has a bad day. It never gets tired of listening to you. It never judges your insecurities. It offers positive feedback on demand, 24/7.
    • This human-like “warmth” tricks the primitive centers of the human brain into feeling a genuine bond. AI users begin to prefer the synthetic relationship because it gives them all the dopamine of companionship… with zero percent of the emotional labor required to maintain a human friendship.
2. Cognitive Atrophy and Learned Helplessness

Researchers studying academic and creative professionals have documented an emerging pattern of “overdependency.”

    • When individuals rely on generative AI for every routine cognitive task — writing an email, brainstorming an idea, analyzing data — they slowly develop a form of learned helplessness.
    • Over time, users report a creeping sense of self-doubt, believing they can no longer write, create, or think critically without the AI’s input. This undermines their intellectual agency and warps their professional identity. They become addicted to the machine not just for entertainment, but for their very sense of cognitive competence.
3. Reality Blurring and “Sycophantic Echo Chambers”

As Stanford researcher Haber revealed, AI models tend to mirror the user’s emotional state completely. Rather than offering an escape, sycophantic AI exacerbates the problem.

    • If you’re feeling paranoid, lonely, or self-critical, a poorly filtered AI model can inadvertently validate those negative states.  
    • If you’re depressed, an AI companion can actually sit there and agree with the logic of your depression. 

A Way Forward

Only time will tell if these preliminary findings pan out. Yes, my fears could be overblown. But AI dependency and its ill effects have already been on trial, literally. See Raine v. OpenAI, the wrongful-death suit where a 16-year-old’s parents allege ChatGPT discussed suicide with him over a thousand times and helped draft his note. 

My guess: this is the tip of the iceberg, and in a few years’ time all of us will be well aware of a much larger problem. 

The way forward is to begin reframing modern addictions, not just alcohol or drug addiction, as real diseases — just as serious as cancer, just as serious as diabetes or any other chronic illness. 

And whether you’re a “sad wife” of someone with AI dependency, or in a relationship with somebody with cancer, please remember that the disease is the problem, not the person.

Finally, this isn’t just a problem for significant others. AI addiction is a problem for individuals, families and ultimately, society. The real enemy isn’t AI: it’s isolation. The cure for this disease is connection, community and friendship. 

As people increasingly retreat into their screens, what we need is not another artificial companion. We need to reconnect with one another, in a way that only humans can: make eye contact, share a meal, embrace, dance and play together.
